Passed away in Greymouth on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, aged 94.
Dearly loved wife of the late Des Hegan
and much loved mother and mother-in-law of Gail & Gavin Skeats, Gary & Donna,
Karen & Les Thomas, and Anne & Steve Kennedy.
Precious Nana of her adored grandchildren,
Dane Johns, Kate McKinnel, Blair Hegan, Nathan Hegan, Anna Thomas,
Ryan Thomas, Ridge Kennedy, and Bailey Wells and a loving ‘Big Nana’ of her ten great grandchildren.
Longtime, respected matriach of the Summers family
and loved sister of Nelly O’Neill, Doris Thomson,
her late brothers Jimmy, Bruce, and Albert Summers,
and sister Betty Skelton.

According to Ruth’s ‘orders’ a cremation will take place
and a family memorial gathering will be held in the future
to lay her ashes with her beloved Des.
A West Coaster through and through and so proud of her Rewanui and Runanga roots.

To Ruth’s Family, Ruth was a longtime neighbour of ours and we got to know her quite well during that time. When our teenagers, way back then, had their cars up our driveway carrying out modifications and blasting out their music Ruth would come over and certainly let them know that it wasn’t her taste in music. She wasn’t afraid to tell them what she thought and mostly it was respected. Now all those years later it is recalled with much humour so she certainly left an impression on them.
We would like to extend to the family our sincerest and most heartfelt sympathy to you all as you navigate the sad time ahead. RIP Ruth.
